Previous Research Programme:

Literature at the Turn of the Century 1870-1918

Special attention is given to the interactions between Scandinavian and European literature and culture in the years between 1870 and 1918, with a view back in time towards Romanticism and the Enlightenment and forward towards Avant-gardism and Modernism. This period is regarded as a place of transit, where
conceptions of literature and cultural history are concentrated, pass through, and transform on their way into the new century. Thus the project reaches both back to the time before 1870 and forward towards the coming turn of the century. Around the year 1900 a constant stream of intellectuals went from Scandinavia to Europe, where Nordic art was of great interest. Correspondingly, Scandinavian artists borrowed a number of important forms of expression that became prevalent in Scandinavia in the 20th century.
