Deception is a form of social communication that is commonly incorporated in social interactions on many levels – truth inhibition, partial truth or deliberates lies. It is quite universal in terms of its patterns of realizations. The way people lie in Australia does not differ so much from the way people deceive in France or elsewhere. The incentives for deceptive behavior and strategies of implementation seem to be unsurprising. The pervasiveness of this type of human behavior has stimulated transdisciplinary investigations in cognitive and social psychology, psychology of language, philosophy, and cognitive neuroscience. fMRI techniques have also been employed in investigating brain activity in the process of deceptive behavior. The incorporation of cognitive neuroscience into linguistic approaches should broaden the analytical perspectives and practical applications.

The speakers will discuss deception from psychological, linguistic and neuroimaging perspectives.
