Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS)

The Nordic Association for American Studies is an independent organization with membership open to individuals who live in or have a scholarly connection to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland or Iceland. The Association seeks to encourage and promote the study of the United States and its civilization in the five Nordic countries and to facilitate communication and contact between those interested in such studies. Each national American Studies association has a chairperson, and they collectively make up the Board of the Nordic Association for American Studies. The officers of the Association are elected at the NAAS conference, held every other year.

The last six conferences have been held at the University of Odense, Denmark, in 1993; the University of Oslo, Norway, in 1995; the University of Gothenberg, Sweden, in 1997; the University of Turku, Finland, in 1999; the Copenhagen Business School in 2001; and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway in 2003.

The forthcoming conference will be held at The next SAAS/NAAS conference will be hosted by Växjö University in May 2005. For further information, contact Gunlög Fur.

NAAS is one of the member organizations of the European Association for American Studies, a federation of regional and national American Studies associations. In addition to the NAAS Newsletter (distributed twice a year), individual NAAS members also receive American Studies in Europe, the Newsletter of the European Association for American Studies.

The current President of the Nordic Association for American Studies is: Dag Blanck at the Centre for Multiethnic Research at Uppsala University.

NAAS Forum Discussion Group

Based at the University of Bergen, Norway, the NAAS Forum is an electronic discussion group designed to enable and promote the sharing of information and views by those interested in American Studies throughout the Nordic region. It enables subscribers to distribute information, queries, news, notes on new books or articles, ideas and proposals relevant to the wide range of interests and objectives of the Nordic Association for American Studies.

Subscription to the NAAS Forum is free. To subscribe, send an e-mail to listserv@uib.no. Leave the subject box empty and simply write 'subscribe naas-forum' in the text box. You will then be registered as a subscriber to the discussion group, and will receive a welcoming message including instructions about using the system. The NAAS Forum is an unmoderated list.
