Patrick Miller is an associate professor at
the Department of History, Northeastern Illinois University, and
during the 1998/1999 academic year is a Visiting Fulbright
Professor at the Department of English, Westfälische Wilhelms
University, Münster, Germany. He holds degrees from Yale
University and the University of California, Berkeley, and is the
author of The Playing Fields of American Culture: Athletics
and Higher Education, 1850-1945 (forthcoming from Oxford
University Press) and (with David Wiggins) The Unlevel
Playing Field: A Documentary History of the African American
Experience in Sport (forthcoming from Illinois University
Press). His research interests include African-American history
and race relations, the history of sports, and US social and
cultural history.
