Irish Studies refers to the study of the cultures of Ireland and the Irish diaspora. Central fields are literature, history, art, popular culture, political culture, and human geography. People engaged in Irish Studies will often combine some of these fields in order to gain insight by a so-called interdisciplinary approach to their subject. Irish Studies is an academic field which has expanded
in the world, after having originally been strongest in Ireland and the
United States. This happens at a time when there is a growing interest
in studying the diverse cultural, regional, ethnic and national identities
of the British Isles and Europe. Irish Studies scholars also link into
national and international networks such as the Nordic Irish Studies Network,
the European Federation of Associations
and Centres of Irish Studies, the International
Association for the Study of Irish Literatures, the British Association
for Irish Studies, the Canadian Association for Irish Studies, and the
American Conference for Irish Studies.
