The objective of Linguistic Graduate School North is to develop and strengthen the linguistic PhD programmes at Aalborg University (AAU), Aarhus School of Business (ASB) and the University of Aarhus. This entails an increase in the courses made available to PhD scholars, a development of the supervision, a strengthening of international contacts, an effort to make the PhD degree programme more attractive, and an increase in the number of PhD scholars.
These objectives are sought fulfilled through the establishment of a secretariat and a website, by arranging seminars for the affiliated scholars and supervisors, through co-operation with the other Danish linguistic graduate schools as well as Nordic and international universities, by arranging courses for the affiliated scholars, by advertising a number of full scholarships and a number of scholarships for international visitors, and by inviting foreign speakers to special events.
Linguistic Graduate School North has established formal co-operation with Gradeast, the regional Linguistic Graduate School East, http://www.hum.ku.dk/gradeast, and with the Institute of Language and Communication at the University of Southern Denmark through the national graduate school (the continuation of) Graduate School in Language and Communication http://www.sdu.dk/Hum/graduateschool/ run by representatives from the three regional graduate schools.
The Graduate School has received a grant of DKK 3 million to advertise two linguistic PhD scholarships.
During the initial three years (August 2002 through August 2005), the Graduate School will be run by a group of three persons, one from each of the affiliated institutions: Hans Götzsche, associate professor, Master of Arts, MA, Department of Communication, Aalborg University, Torben Thrane, professor, MA, PhD, Department of Language and Business Communication, Aarhus School of Business and Ole Togeby, professor, dr. phil., Scandinavian Institute, University of Aarhus with Ole Togeby functioning as the daily supervisor. The graduate school management can be likened to a departmental executive committee, but it relates economically to three different faculty councils and deans.
